Events

A retrospective look at events I have taken part in.

Ten Countries Run - September 2007

My second Ten Countries Run - with a similar feeling to the first with Craig as my co-driver again - however this time it was my grey 6 pot saloon in the form of a 2000. Also with us (and by no means least) we had Andrew Dawson along for the ride. This time the car was a bit more troublesome - valve clearances closing up and self inflicted carburettor sabotage amongst other things. Overall it was a good run - if a little disappointing after all the costly preparation beforehand.

Tim and I had planned to do this event in his GT6 - however it decided to break no more than 15 minutes after he picked me up. A decision was made to take my saloon - which had zero prep. So just like last year we were in a slate grey big saloon - it felt all rather similar. The event went without a hitch - and it was only on the way back that the fuel system showed signs of not being used as it totally blocked a fuel filter.

Me and Ben at John O’Groats

My second go at the Round Britain Reliability Run - and far more enjoyable than the first. I did this one with Ben in his GT6 Mk1 after it was obvious my Mk3 was never going to be ready. There weren’t any problems with the car, and we just did the event without any hassle at all, and completed it in almost bang on 48 hours.

Tim’s Mk1 PI in Scotland

Sadly due to the ill health of Jim this one was cut down to just a single day - was good fun however. This time I was co-driving with Tim in his Mk1 PI.

Ten Countries Run - September 2005

Me and Craig somewhere in the Alps

My first European endurance event - and pretty awesome it was too. A month before the event my Mk3 got driven in to so we ended up doing it in Craig’s Vitesse. Very civilised and nothing to go wrong apart from some non-existent faded brakes coming down a mountain. The event turned in to a bit of a Ten Cuisine Run when we teamed up with Dave and Fred.

Jim McG’s Sprite

I was invited by Jim McG to do this event in his Sprite. He’d never met me, let alone been in a car with me - this was all to change however. He claims I tried to drive his Sprite under a 4×4 and to this day still points out that whilst it’s a small car, it’s not that small!

Round Britain Reliability Run - October 2004

My Mk3 at John O’Groats

My first ever endurance event - what a weekend! All things considered everything went well really, we lost clutch hydraulics on the way up to John O’Groats. More of a problem were the drivers! Chris got food poisoning from a sandwich he consumed Friday night - which meant I did all the driving on Saturday from JOG to the infamous Oswestry. But let’s not talk about Oswestry…
